University Archivist and Head of Special Collections at York University

Head, Archives and Special Collections

York University Libraries invite applications for the position of
University Archivist and Head, Archives and Special Collections. The
successful candidate is responsible for the administration of the
Archives and Special Collections unit consisting of three full-time
staff and several student assistants. He/she manages the development of
archival collections of university records and private fonds. York
University is the third largest university in Canada serving a
population of approximately 50,000 students from diverse cultures. York
University Archives and Special Collections hold 690 metres of
university records; over 1900 metres of private and institutional papers
and an extensive collection of non-textual materials (e.g. the Music
Gallery, Danny Grossman Dance Company, and Toronto Telegram photograph
collections). Special Collections has over 20,000 volumes of published
Canadiana, including Canadian pamphlets.

The Head of Archives and Special Collections works within a
collaborative and team environment. The incumbent provides strategic
leadership and vision for the role of the university archives within
York University. He/she works closely with those responsible for records
management in University Administration and Academic units and acts as
an advisor to the University community concerning records management.
He/she is responsible for the acquisition, appraisal, description,
preservation, and provision of access to extensive archival resources.
The Head also works in conjunction with colleagues to develop and manage
special collections at York University Libraries. The incumbent is
committed to scholarship,
professional development and service.

Qualifications: MAS, or, an MLS or postgraduate degree in a relevant
discipline with professional archival education. At least four years of
professional archival experience in an established archives, preferably
in an academic setting. Expertise in using Rules for Archival
Description (RAD) and records/information management; understanding of
Encoded Archival Description (EAD); in-depth knowledge of current trends
and issues in archives; demonstrated experience with information
technology; ability to handle the physical demands of the job; proven
competence in management; effective communication skills; demonstrated
ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with
University officers, colleagues, donors and researchers. Knowledge of
French is an asset.

This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment commensurate with the
university's continuing appointment legislation. The administrative term
as Head, Archives and Special Collections is a five-year renewable term
appointment commencing July 1, 2004. The rank and salary will be
commensurate with experience. All York University positions are subject
to budgetary approval.
