Hi Dennis. I hope we get to meet some day soon. I see your name frequently.

I'm a Nova Scotian by birth and my extended family still resides in rural NS. Gus
Thompson (Edmonton) did a report on the distribution of social problems like
suicide, homocide, etc. across the country and found the lowest rates in the
Atlantic region with increasing rates in the most prosperous provinces. It seems
to contradict the economic determinants model, except there may be important
social network and social support "inequalities" that go along with the
unemployment (i.e., higher levels, low mobility, stability). In addition, the
absolute discrepancies between income groups may differ, although I haven't
pursued the data. Certainly, Nova Scotia has a high unemployment rate, but then I
read that Halifax had a very low rate. In addition, you must also account for the
fact that fishermen still claim unemployment (as far as I know) even though they
may have had very successful seasons.

Good luck and I hope you got the data you needed.
