The book is _The True Adventures of Huckleberry Finn_ by John
Seelye--written
partly as a joke, partly satire of criticism, partly serious criticism--in
answer to certain
dominant critical attacks upon Twain's novel, such as the controversy over
the last
1/3th of the book when Tom re-enters the story. It was an attempt to
present the
novel as the critics seemed to say it should be, rather than as Twain wrote
it, so it
was not an attempt, except in a comical way, to "improve" upon Twain's work.
I
believe that it appeared in the late 1960s or early 1970s.
