Hello all, yet another legislative update: Saturday's Globe and Mail (Jan 26th, 2002, A10) contained an article entitled "Ontario proposes new privacy legislation". The article cites Ministry of Consumer and Business Services officials who claim that the proposed act will be the strictest of its kind in North America. "Ontario plans to enact a tough law to prevent hospitals, businesses, charities and other organizations from violating Ontarian's personal privacy." The legislation is Ontario's much-waited response to federal legislation on this matter (federal Bill C-6), supposedly raising the bar from the guidelines established by the federal government which must be phased in by January, 2004.
For your information, the Ministry is currently accepting feedback on its approach to bringing forward the legislation, with comments due by March 8th, 2002. Perhaps the AAO or members of HAIG should provide some input into this legislation. A PDF form is available on line at: http://www.cbs.gov.on.ca/mcbs/english/56HK6V.htm
