Regarding Cantillon, he made money on both the Mississippi and South
Sea bubbles personally, getting out of France on the day he unloaded
his holdings, a bit before the peak, but in plenty of time to get in
on the ground floor of the South Sea one before it really took
off. In France he actually had a bank that was selling the market
short in various ways, pretty tricky. His observations turned him
into a strict monetarist and bullionist in order to avoid any such
shenanigans in the future so that others would not be able to make
money as he did.
