A.W. Coats edited a book about that, entitled Economists in Government,
Duke Univ. Press, 1981, gathering papers talking about Britain,
Australia, Brazil, India, the US etc.

Hutchinson also talks about this issue in his Knowledge and ignorance in
economics, as well as Thurow in his Dangerous Currents. Thurow mentions
that of the 16 members of Carter's staff in 1976, 5 were economics Phds.

In Brazil we have a strong tradition of economists holding important
positions as public administrators. Their participation in the government
increased during the military regime, and apparently did not decrease
afterwards. The only similar experience seems to be that of Israel. If
you read Portuguese, you can find more about this in Loureiro, Maria
Rita, Os economistas no governo, Editora Getulio Vargas, Rio de Janeiro,
1997.
