Dear Yuri, 
 
I believe it is from_The Hound of the Baskervilles_ by Arthur Conan  
Doyle. It is from the scene in which Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and  
Mr. Baskerville discussing the editorial from the Times, which gives an  
important clue.    
 
By the way, one certain Sherlockian attempted to locate the very  
editorial, with no avail.
