=================== HES POSTING =====================

This note reminds early career junior faculty that the National
Science Foundation has an exciting funding opportunity for them
through its Early Career Faculty Development (CAREER) program. The
Societal Dimensions of Engineering, Science, and Technology program
(SDEST) and the Science and Technology Studies program (STS), in the
Division of Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences at NSF, are
participating in the CAREER program, and expect to make several awards
during this competition.

Proposals must be received at NSF by July 22, 1998, to be considered.
Proposals from women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with
disabilities are especially encouraged. The SDEST program supports
research on issues of ethics and the conduct and impact of
engineering, science and technology. It also supports research on
directions, management, and outcomes from U.S. investment in
engineering, science, and technology. The STS program supports
research on the character and development of science and technology,
including their cultural, intellectual, material and social
dimensions. All early career faculty doing research and teaching in
these areas, who meet all of the following requirements, are eligible
to apply to CAREER:

     - are employed at an institution in the U.S., its territories or
possessions, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, that awards a
baccalaureate or advanced degree in a field supported by NSF;
     - are in their first or second full-time tenure-track academic
appointment and have begun the first tenure-track or
tenure-track-equivalent appointment (at any institution) on or after
July 1, 1994;
     - are not tenured and did not hold tenure before July 22, 1998;
     -are not a current or former recipient of an NSF PECASE,
Presidential or NSF Young Investigator, Presidential Faculty Fellow,
or NSF CAREER award. Prior or concurrent Federal support for other
types of awards or for non-duplicative research does not preclude
eligibility.

Exemptions to the above eligibility criteria are listed in the full
Program Guidelines which are available only on the web at:

http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/getpub?nsf98103

If you have questions about CAREER or the SDEST or STS programs,
please contact the program directors: Ed Hackett ([log in to unmask])
for STS; Rachelle Hollander ([log in to unmask]) for SDEST; or John
Perhonis ([log in to unmask]) about either program.
