Is it Dickens', A Tale of Two Cities?  The scene where the senior  
barrister (the protagonist's boss) is arguing a case; it serves as a  
backdrop to introduce the protagonist.  I must confess it's more than  
30 years since I read the book, but only a few since last seeing Ronald  
Coleman as the protagonist in the movie.  Was his character's name  
Charles Darnay?
