Schumpeter wrote that in a letter to Arthur Smithies in 1943. See
Arthur Smithies "Memorial: JAS, 1883-1950", in Saymor E. Harris,
_Schumpeter, social scientifist_, 1951. Robert Loring Allen, _Opening
doors: the life and work of Joseph Schumpeter_ (1991, chapter 24,
section 6), also gives the quotation and says that the manuscripts letters
from Schumpeter were donated to Harvard University by Smithies.
Allen told us that, at the end of his life, Schumpeter was really upset
with politics (war) and economics (Keynes), and virtually any
conversation topic with colleagues was a pain.
