THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING CENTRE
Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto
presents a one-day workshop in Toronto and Ottawa

COPYRIGHT DEMYSTIFIED

Toronto: Fri. Sep. 24. 2004, 9 am - 4 pm
Ottawa: Wed. Sep. 29, 2004, 9 am - 4 pm
Instructor: Jean Dryden
$180 Toronto/$260 Ottawa

Amendments to the Canadian Copyright Act included, for the first time,
significant exceptions for libraries, archives, and museums. These
exceptions are complex, and subject to a host of conditions and
limitations. The amendments tried to provide a fair balance between the
rights of those who create works, and the needs of those who use them.
However, that balance is being tested by advances in communication
technology and increasing digitization that make it easy to copy,
change, and disseminate others' works without their permission.
Legislative changes, greater awareness of copyright issues, and the
challenges of the digital environment have changed the copyright
landscape. Heritage institutions, their employees, and their patrons are
rightly concerned about copyright issues.

Instructor Jean Dryden is the 2004 recipient of the PLC Outstanding
Teaching Award.

STUDENT COMMENTS

“Jean is a very articulate, funny, and well-organized workshop leader.
She allowed for great discussion but was able to keep the course on track.”

“The instructor was successful in taking the subject and breaking it
down into small bite-size understandable pieces. This was a worthwhile
investment of my time.”

“Fabulous! Great help and thorough information. Thank you!”

TARGET AUDIENCE
Librarians, archivists and museum curators who are responsible for
administering copyright in their institutions, and researchers who use
the holdings of libraries, archives, and museums in their work.
