POSITION TITLE: Digitization Assistant
DEPARTMENT: County of Brant Public Library
LOCATION: Paris Branch
REPORTS TO: Reference & E-Resource Librarian
STATUS: 67-week contract at 35 hours per week ; Monday-Friday 9 am-5 pm
START DATE: January 3, 2011

GENERAL PURPOSE
Reporting to the Reference & E-Resource Librarian, the Digitization 
Assistant will participate in the creation and development of the 
Librarys digital historical collection including metadata application, 
archive management, document scanning, and website and wiki 
administration and maintenance. The successful candidate will be a 
creative individual who works well with minimal supervision. Travel 
between the Library and local historical organizations will be required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee Digital Scanning Process
 Scan or photograph of a variety of documents (including photos, 
documents and objects) using established procedures and archival 
standards
 Ensure proper handling of historical documents and objects
 Create archival quality 600 dpi TIFFs and corresponding web-quality 
JPGs for each digital item

Application of Metadata Standards to Digital Items
 Apply metadata framework to each digital item
 Apply copyrights and reproduction rights for each item

Management of Collection Website and Wiki
 Upload digital items and corresponding metadata to collection website
 Oversee transcription process and creation of corresponding 
transcripts for all textual documents (checking for accuracy)
 Create archival DVDs of high resolution images for the Library and 
its partners
 Administer and manage the OurBrant wiki

Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of metadata standards, principles of collection development, 
and skills in wiki administration and electronic file manipulation are 
essential.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Students or recent graduates of an MLIS program or related discipline 
with archival experience are preferred.

SKILLS
Must have experience with Microsoft Office Professional Suite and Adobe 
Photoshop CS4. Should be familiar with CMS, FTP, and document scanners. 
Knowledge of the VITA Toolkit, MediaWiki, and Semantic MediaWiki is an 
asset.

A strong ability to organize, adhere to timelines, and work as part of a 
team is necessary.

Candidates must have a valid drivers license and their own vehicle as 
travel within the county may be required.
