City Council Declares Archives Awareness Week In Windsor
Tuesday, April 03, 2001
At Windsor City Council on Monday evening, Mayor Michael Hurst and City
Councillors declared April 2-8 Archives Awareness Week in Windsor. Council
was responding to a request from the citizens’ group Friends of the
Archives, a request supported by the Windsor Public Library. Friends
Co-Chair Thom Smith asked that the proclamation be made “in recognition of
the important role played by the Archives in the Windsor Public Library in
preserving and making available documentary materials from all aspects of
our community, promoting its heritage and safeguarding the collective memory
and rights of its citizens.” To commemorate the occasion, the Friends of
the Archives are presenting a 1928 silent film Building the Bridge, the
story of the building of the Ambassador Bridge. This film was donated to the
City of Windsor for preservation and, last year, the Friends raised funds to
restore it. The film will be shown at the Windsor Public Library, 850
Ouellette Avenue, on Saturday, April 7 at 7:00 pm in conjunction with a
silent auction. Tickets cost $12, or $10 for senior citizens. It will be
shown again on Sunday, April 8 at 2:00 pm, with tickets priced at $5.
Proceeds go to support Windsor’s Community Archives. The 600 members of
the Archives Association of Ontario, an association of which Windsor’s
Community Archives is a member, have asked the Province of Ontario to pass a
bill establishing Archives Awareness Week as an annual event across the
province.
