COPYRIGHT IN MOVING IMAGE MATERIALS

Ottawa - Thursday, May 13, 2004
Toronto - Friday, May 14, 2004
Time: 9 am - 4 pm
Instructor: Jean Dryden
Fee: $180 Toronto / $260 Ottawa

The application of copyright law to moving image materials (films and
videos) is particularly complex. Anyone who preserves or uses such
materials needs to understand the impact of copyright on their work.

Through lecture, examples, discussion, and case studies, this course
presents the copyright rules that apply specifically to moving image
materials and their application within the overall context of the
Canadian Copyright Act. Participants will learn about the complex
rules for calculating ownership and duration of copyright. They will
also learn how to analyze a copyright problem and how to administer
copyright in a film and video collection. The course includes the
following topics:

* An overview of the Copyright Act and how it works
* The rules that apply to films and videos
* A systematic approach to analyzing a copyright problem
* Your responsibilities as a user of others' films and videos
* Government plans for copyright reform

TARGET AUDIENCE
Librarians, archivists and museum curators who are responsible for
collections of moving image materials; film-makers wishing to know
more about their rights, and anyone who uses moving image materials
in their work.
