THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING CENTRE
Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto
presents a one-day workshop in Ottawa and Toronto

COPYRIGHT IN PHOTOGRAPHS

Ottawa: November 24, 2004
Toronto: November 26, 2004

Amendments to the Canadian Copyright Act in 1997 resulted in significant
changes
to the rules governing copyright in photographs. The new rules are
complex, and not always easy to understand. They affect both ownership
and duration of copyright in photos. Anyone who preserves or uses
photographs must understand the impact of the changes to the Act.
Through lecture, examples, discussion, and case studies, this course
presents the copyright rules that apply specifically to photographs and
the application of the rules within the overall context of the Canadian
Copyright Act. Participants will learn about the difference between
ownership of the physical object, and ownership of the copyright in it.
They will also learn how to analyze a copyright problem and how to
administer copyright in a photograph collection. The course includes the
following topics:

• An overview of the Copyright Act and how it works
• The rules which apply to photographs
• A systematic approach to analyzing a copyright problem
• Your responsibilities as a user of others' photos
• The impact of recent Supreme Court Decisions
• Government plans for copyright reform

TARGET AUDIENCE
Librarians, archivists and museum curators who are responsible for
photograph collections; photographers wishing to protect their rights,
and anyone who uses photographs to illustrate their work in print or
online.
