ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY

POSITION:               Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts
DATE OF VACANCY:        May 25, 2000

The New York Academy of Medicine is a non-profit organization dedicated
to
improving the health of the public.  The Academy Library contains over
700,000 printed books, as well as significant collections of
manuscripts,
archives, photographs, and artifacts.  As the only medical library in
New
York that it open to the public, the Academy's collections are consulted
by regional students  and faculty, as well as the general public.  The
Academy Library's internationally renowned Historical Collections
attracts
researchers from around the world.  For further information about the

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Associate Academy Librarian for Historical
Collections and Programs, the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts
will:

*Supervise daily operations of the Historical Collections reading room,
including scheduling of researchers and monitoring of security
procedures
and environmental conditions.  Develop and revise policies and
procedures
relating to reading room and collection security, reference, access and
preservation of the rare book and manuscript collections.

*Participate in planning and implementing the digital endeavor of the
Academy, especially in regard to electronic access to the collections
and
use of technology for improved promotion and dissemination of historical
materials.

*Participate in public service activities, including reference work,
bibliographic instruction, and outreach activities (such as conducting
tours of the Library) for rare book, manuscript, archival, and museum
collections.  Assist with orders for photographic services.

*Coordinate exhibition program, including long-range planning of shows
and
related events, and preparation of exhibitions.  Plan and implement
virtual exhibits.

*Develop rare book collections through purchase, gift and transfer.
Consult, as appropriate, with the Associate Librarian.  Develop
relationships with international antiquarian booksellers.  Administer
endowed budget.

*Edit newsletter Favourite Edition. Write and solicit articles from
staff
and scholars. Plan layout of issues, supervise assembly and mailing of
newsletter.  Participate in mounting electronic version on website.

*Supervise original and copy cataloguing of rare books.

*Collaborate with the preservation staff in establishing priorities
regarding conservation treatment of historical materials.

*Work with Associate Librarian to identify and prepare grant proposals
for
programs, preservation, technology-based projects, and bibliographic
control.

*Review requests from other institutions and organizations to borrow
books, manuscripts,     artifacts, and other materials for exhibition.

*Maintain professional presence in library and academic organizations,
through publication, presentations, and service.

*Serve as liaison to Friends of the Rare Book Room and plan annual
meeting.

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate degree from ALA-accredited program in library
science; 5 or more years experience in a rare book and manuscript
library;
proficiency in at least two Western European languages (preferably
French,
German, or Latin); excellent written and oral communication and
interpersonal skills; familiarity with national standards in
administering
collections of rare books and manuscripts; and commitment to public
service.  Strong preference will be given to candidates with a graduate
degree in history or the humanities; course work in the history of
science
or medicine; knowledge of the antiquarian book trade; experience with
digital libraries; supervisory experience; experience in donor relations
and fund raising; and proficiency with computers, networks, and digital
access techniques.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications.  Salary and benefits are
competitive with academic libraries in metropolitan New York.
