Subject: Input to Bill C36 - the new Library and Archives of Canada
From: Terry Cook <[log in to unmask]>
The Canadian Historical Association will be presenting a brief, jointly
with the Association of Canadian Archivists, this coming Thursday, June 5,
2003, starting at 9:00, in Room 308, West Block of the Parliament
Buildings, before the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, on Bill C36,
"An Act to establish the Library and Archives of Canada, to amend the
Copyright Act and to amend certain Acts in consequence." The new
legislation and resulting merged institution have major implications for
archivists and historians, among others. Terry Cook will be the CHA-ACA
spokesperson, and witness before the committee.
Text of the bill may be obtained at:
http://www.parl.gc.ca/37/2/parlbus/chambus/house/bills/government/C-36/C-36_1/C-36_cover-E.html
The bill is in committee stage, following second reading.
Should you have any suggestions of points to be made in the brief or
amendments to be suggested for Bill C36, please send them to me directly
for consideration no later than Monday midnight. I realize that this time
is very short, but this bill is being fast-tracked and ACA-CHA involvement
was only confirmed yesterday. This posting gives those concerned a chance
for involvement.
Cheers, Terry
