Women’s Health Speaker Series

We’re Talking Sex
& Gender in the CIHR:
Who Gets the Research Money?

Presentation:
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the newly-created
federal funding body for health research in Canada. What is the best way
for the CIHR to be structured to ensure that women get their fair share of
the newly dedicated $240 million federal health research dollars to be
allocated over the next three years?

The presenters will discuss the option of a new Canadian Women’s Health
Research Institute which would address both biomedical and social research
questions based on both the biological factors of sex and the socially-constructed
issues of gender. They will also discuss the climate for women’s issues in the
CIHR and the need for public involvement in setting funding priorities for health
research.

Presenters:
Penny Ballem, MD is a hematologist and the Vice-President of Children’s and
Women’s Health Centre of BC. She is the chair of the national CIHR Women’s
Working Group.

Lorraine Greaves, PhD, is the Director of the BC Centre of Excellence for
Women’s Health and an Interim Governing Council member of the CIHR.
She is the Principal Investigator of the SSHRC & CHSRF funded research
paper, “Sex and Gender in the CIHR.”

Olena Hankivsky, PhD, is a Political Scientist and a Research Associate
at the BC Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health. She is a co-investigator
