The only sources I have ever seen for detailed information about 
recipients of Ph.D.'s are in W. Lee Hansen's "The Education and Training 
of Economics Doctorates (_JEL_, Sept. 1991). Hansen constructed several 
tables in the article from diverse sources (all listed) to provide a 
plethora of information on things like U.S. citizenship, undergraduate 
institution of origin, sex. His article would probably be the best place 
to start looking.
