Professional Development - Copyright in Ottawa

The AAO is pleased to present another workshop on copyright! Also, take
advantage of the warm May weather in Ottawa and join the Eastern Ontario
Chapter's social event Friday night! The local chapter will be mounting a pub
event to travel to various establishments on May 5. Please contact the EOC for
further details.

Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6
8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Ottawa, Novotel Hotel
33 Nicholas St.
(please note the Friday / Saturday dates)

Now that the amendments to the Copyright Act are fully in force, the AAO is
pleased to present a two-day workshop, in Ottawa, on copyright. This workshop
provides an overview of the recently amended Canadian copyright law and an
opportunity to apply the law while discussing six case studies.

The first day is devoted to an intensive overview of how the Canadian copyright
law works. Topic covered include:
categories of works, ownership of copyright, term of
copyright, economic and moral rights of copyright owners,
exceptions, penalties for infringement, international copyright, and how to
                    analyze a copyright problem.

The second day allows participants to apply what they have learned as they
discuss six case studies on the topics of:
Photos, Unlocatable copyright owners, Term of copyright in
unpublished works, Copyright
in foreign records, Donor agreements, and Creating a
website. Each case also raises a
number of other copyright questions that come up every day
in reading rooms across the
country. The second day will conclude with a discussion of
what your institution has to do to comply with the changes
to the Act.

Presented by:
Jean Dryden is an information resources consultant with over twenty-five years
experience in archives and records management in the government, educational and
not-for-profit sectors. Her expertise in copyright, particularly in unpublished
archival material, has been developed over many years. She served as the Chair
of the Bureau of Canadian Archivists Copyright Committee from 1993 to 1999, and
played a lead role in successful lobbying for exceptions for libraries, archives
and museums. She has been actively involved in developing training materials
and delivering workshops
to acquaint the archival community with the recent changes to the law, and is
currently developing training materials for other constituencies. Now that the
Act is fully in force, she has been assisting institutions in implementing the
necessary changes to their policies, procedures, and forms.
