The purpose of the education program of the Archives Association of Ontario is
to provide formalized training for the membership of the organization and for
others interested in archival duties in Ontario.

The next scheduled Core-Workshop program is:

Date Location Workshop

Jan. 22-23, 2000 Ottawa, Courtyard Marriott Hotel ARCH1006:
Appraisal 2 (Monetary)

ARCH1006: Archival Appraisal 2 (Monetary) Course Description:

It is important for the archivist to have a working knowledge of the value of
the items in his or her institution. For instance,
without a general grasp of market demand for an item, the archivist is unable to
know whether a donation might merit evaluation for a taxation receipt and if its
value is above or below the limit for in-house appraisal. This knowledge will
also be required in negotiating with those wishing to sell items of interest to
the archive. A knowledge of market values is useful in establishing standard
insurance coverage for the archive.

Please note that this workshop is not intended to qualify an archivist to become
an appraiser of rare manuscripts nor will it provide sufficient knowledge for a
career as a dealer. However, in combination with ARCH1005, this workshop will
make the archivist much better able to appreciate the collection in his or her
care.
