PROJECT ARCHIVIST - RAD CONVERSION

Project Duration: Approximately 14 weeks

Institution: The City of Vaughan Archives is an administrative unit of the
City of Vaughan Municipal Government mandated to manage the
recorded information of the latter and acquire, manage and provide
access to documentary material relating to the Vaughan community. The
City of Vaughan borders the City of Toronto. Public transportation
service is provided by the Toronto Transit Commission and Transit.

Project Description: The City of Vaughan Archives is seeking a qualified
individual to undertake the conversion of a number of descriptive
inventories to a RAD-compliant format. The incumbent will be guided by
the Vaughan Archives' comprehensive descriptive policies and
procedures, which utilize the data content standard RAD for all finding
aids. The conversion of some 15 descriptive inventories to fonds of
public and private provenance will constitute the final element of the
CVA's retrospective description of its oldest finding aids. Redescription
will entail analysis of data contained in each existing inventory;
application of RAD to the foregoing at the fonds, sous-fonds, series and
sub-series levels (as applicable) in the context of the CVA's descriptive
policies and procedures, and descriptive inventory format to create
appropriate descriptive entities; application of CVA decisions re: RAD
rule interpretations and discretionary rules; and preparation of electronic
and manual inventories.

Qualifications: MAS or MIS (archival stream) degree with one year
archival experience, preferably concentrated in archival description
activities; Graduate degree with 2-3 years experience in a recognized
archival program and formal RAD training, with substantial experience in
archival description. Excellent knowledge of archival theory,
methodology and practice; demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of
RAD and its underlying principles; familiarity with automated database
management systems in an archival context; working knowledge of
MARC data formatting standard would be an asset. Applicants with
lesser levels of qualification may be considered.

Compensation: $140.00 per day ($20.00/hr for 7 hr working day)/35 hr
week.

Deadline: Please forward resume and cover letter before 2 April 1999
