Subject: BSMP - Black Students Mentorship Program

Dear all,

My name is Amanda Nkeramihigo. I am the Program and Events director for Black Students in Psychology at York University, as well as the program lead for a new and exciting initiative called the Black Students Mentorship Program (BSMP).

We are reaching out to you to introduce BSMP and invite you to help us spread the word within your networks.

What is BSMP?

The Black Students Mentorship Program (BSMP) is a brand new initiative at York University. At the helm are students from the Faculty of Health with a mission: to address and help remediate the demonstrably persistent lack of Black representation in the population makeup of graduate students and professionals in health-related graduate studies and professions.

What is the goal?

The goal of BSMP is to establish mentorship and community for Black undergraduate students across the Faculty of Health, connecting them to each other and to Black graduate students, alumni, scholars and professionals in the field of health.

What is the drive?

We see and acknowledge the scarceness of Black graduate students and health professionals as both an obstacle and the result of inequitable access to education, information and opportunities. BSMP will provide a safe and supportive environment, education and community to Black students in the Faculty of Health, while continuously gathering data to understand and help close these gaps. Ultimately, BSMP intends to increase the number of Black students pursuing higher education, research and/or employment in health-related settings.

What is the desired outcome?

The ideal outcome would be an increase in confidence, access and capacity for Black students, and ultimately an increase in the population of Black graduate students in the Faculty of Health programs and Black professionals in various health professions. The added benefit of this desired outcome will be an increase in diversity in research and innovation streams as we evolve to include the voices, experiences and expertise of Black individuals in academic, research and/or professional careers in health.

WE NEED YOUR HELP.

BSMP recognizes that the lack of Black representation is a wide-reaching issue affecting academia, research and professions in health, among many other fields. For that reason, BSMP, initially a Black Students in Psychology project, has widened its program scope to serve all Black students interested in pursuing graduate studies, research scholarship and professions in health in general - nursing, neuroscience, psychology and other health related academic and professional pursuits.

We need your help to make this happen.
We are looking to reach students of African descent across the Faculty of Health, both at the graduate and undergraduate level, as well as your colleagues, and encourage them and you to join as mentors or mentees.
In the process of initiating the Black Student Mentorship Program, we are looking to recruit:

Mentees: Undergraduate students who identify as Black and could benefit from a targeted mentorship initiative.

Mentors: Faculty of Health graduates, alumni and health professionals who identify as Black and are open to sharing their experiences, knowledge and academic journey through mentoring Black undergraduate students in the faculty of Health.

Faculty members and allies: Current faculty members teaching or leading in the Faculty of health.

We have no doubt that we will see rising stars among our pool of students. We wish to give Black undergraduate students the confidence and the opportunities, tools, as well as the community they need to succeed. We would very much appreciate your support and an opportunity to work with you toward this worthy goal.
