Bethune College PResents: Science on the Cutting Edge – Thursday, March 10, 2022 from 3:00pm - 4:00pm

Leeches, dung beetles, rivers and sky: how environmental DNA is changing the way we study the planet.

Did you know that the DNA of other organisms is right in front of your eyes – in the very air you breathe? Professor Elizabeth Clare has been studying environmental DNA and how this forensic methodology can be used to study biodiversity. Come hear more about her research, and her pathway to her current position as a Professor in the Biology Department at York University.

Environmental (e)DNA is genetic material we all leave behind all the time in form of dead skin cells, hair fragments, and even in the air we breathe. Collecting this (e)DNA has revolutionized how scientists approach ecology and is particularly popular as a forensic method to study fish populations. Is it non-invasive and allows us to study diversity remotely. We recently demonstrated that we can filter (e)DNA right out of the air. This has the potential to transform how we study terrestrial biodiversity. In this lecture Prof. Clare will introduce you to the topic of DNA barcoding, metabarcoding and the wonderful world of environmental DNA. She will show you how we use these forensic methods to study diet, tropical ecosystems, and how we might now be able to vacuum DNA right out of the sky to study the world around us.

Professor Clare has always been interested in the natural world. She’s been camping and canoeing since she was a child and is an avid wildlife photographer. Prof. Clare did her undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario where she joined the Neff Lab and lived on the Queen’s Biology Station every summer conducting fish research. She completed her PhD at the University of Guelph on the diversity of neotropical bats and then won an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship to develop dietary metabarcoding at Bristol University and Cardiff University in the UK. Following a faculty position at Queen Mary University of London studying environmental DNA methods and the impact of broad scale landscape changes on tropical ecosystems, she returned to Ontario with her husband and two young children. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at York.

Despite being making up the overall majority in the field, women represent a stark minority in health leadership. According to the International Finance Corporation, 70%<https://www.ifc.org/wps/wcm/connect/industry_ext_content/ifc_external_corporate_site/health/publications/womens+leadership+in+health> of 43 million<https://www.ifc.org/wps/wcm/connect/industry_ext_content/ifc_external_corporate_site/health/publications/womens+leadership+in+health> of women undersell their skills and don’t aim for leadership positions. How can today's students prepare themselves to become health leaders? EWIH has created Building Power to help you: we have a set of 3 distinct workshops hosted by healthcare leaders from diverse fields such as healthcare tech, healthcare law, and practicing physicians to help you in your interviews, mitigate issues of imposter syndrome, teach you how to build your portfolio and much more. Student counselling, health & well-being is here for you

Hello from Student Counselling, Health & Well-being<https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/> (SCHW)! We are a department in the Division of Students that supports the mental health and well-being of students at York University. We wanted to take a moment to let you know about us and the FREE services and supports that are available to you this year.

Peer-led Workshops
Our team of peer health educators offer workshops on a variety of well-being topics including Mental Health 101, Nutrition Basics, Sleep for Better Grades, Healthier Coping Strategies, Self-Care, and much more. To see what is offered and to sign-up for a workshop, take a look here: https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/workshops

Individual Counselling
SCHW offers same-day and appointment-based counselling in a safe and non-judgemental space. University life can be challenging, and our team of counsellors are here to help you feel heard and understood. Simply call our reception line at (416)-736-5297<https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/individual-counselling> to connect with a counsellor for support. During your session, your counsellor will develop a goal with you, and help you move closer towards personal success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, our services are confidential and no problem is too small. We are here for you!

Group Support
Some students may prefer to meet with peers for encouragement and support rather than or in addition to meeting with a counsellor one-to-one. If group support is something that interests you, you’re in luck! SCHW will be offering the following groups (all of which are facilitated or co-facilitated by counsellors) during 2021-2022:

· LGBTQ2S+ Support Group

· Racialized Students Support Group

· Support Group for Survivors of Sexual Violence (in partnership with The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education)

· Virtual Trauma-Informed Yoga Group

· Gay Men’s Process Group

· Grief & Loss Group

To learn more about each group and/or how to connect, please visit:

SCHW’s Monthly Trans and Non-binary Support Group

Join our monthly online group to meet other York students navigating gender in a relaxed and safe space. Our group is facilitated by Jay Jonah, a trans-masculine social worker who specializes in supporting trans and non-binary folx. This group is a space to share as much or as little as you want. Ask questions, just listen in, or chat and make some new friends! Open to all trans, non-binary, gender-non-conforming folxs, and those who are questioning their gender.

Suicide Prevention & Awareness Certification

SCHW is continuing to offer licences for ‘LivingWorks Start’ to the York U community. In just one hour online, LivingWorks Start teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. We will be giving out licences every month, so add your name here<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=GBNTNBFw1E-H8KQ4FsSb0AD0UWS0aLhGmccT5ec3asBUMDhaOEtKVTNRUEVXUlYxVDBZVkxWT041RyQlQCN0PWcu>.
