Hi all graduate students in HEALTH and undergraduate students in SHPM, 

The following supplementary award of up to $6,000 is awarded to holders of 
CGS Master?s or Doctoral awards (that are administered by any of the 
Tri-Councils - CIHR, SSHRC or NSERC) or holders of Vanier CGS Doctoral to 
help offset their costs?including travel and accommodation?of undertaking 
research studies OUTSIDE CANADA for a defined period.

To apply, you MUST apply online and then submit a completed application 
package to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) at York University 
directly by Monday, October 5, 2009.    FGS is located in Room 283, York 
Lanes.    DO NOT SUBMIT APPLICATIONS TO OUR PROGRAM.

Canada Graduate Scholarships? Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements 

The Fellowships and Institutional Grants Division is pleased to announce 
that the 2009-2010 CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements application 
form and instructions have been posted on all three granting agency web 
sites:

Note: Students may only be awarded funds from the Michael Smith CGS-FSS 
program if they have accepted or hold a CGS (Masters or Doctoral) award or 
a Vanier CGS, administered by one of the three granting agencies. 

Results from this competition should be available in Deember 2009. The 
award must be taken up within one year of receiving a successful notice of 
award from the agency.

Submit your completed application to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by 
Monday, October 5 

Please read the full application instructions before submitting to FGS. A 
complete application consists of: 
1. The on-line Canada Graduate Scholarships?Michael Smith Foreign Study 
Supplements application form (completed, printed off and signed); 
2. The detailed proposal (maximum 2 pages); 
3. A Letter of Support from the current research supervisor (maximum 1 
page); and 
4. A Letter of Support from the host supervisor (maximum 1 page). 


For your convenience, here is some of the program information: 

Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible to apply for this program, applicants must: 
- be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada; 
- be registered at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of 
application; 
- have accepted or hold an Alexander Graham Bell Graduate Scholarship 
(CGS) (Master?s or Doctoral level) or a Vanier CGS administered by one of 
the granting agencies and ensure that the scholarship will still be active 
at the time the research study abroad begins. 

To remain eligible a successful applicant must:   
- be registered full-time in a graduate research studies program at a 
Canadian institution for the duration of time abroad; 
- take up the award within one year of receiving the notice of award for 
the Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement; and 
- return to graduate from your Canadian institution. 

Duration of the award 

The minimum length of stay abroad the CGS-MSFSS program will support is 
three months and the maximum duration of support is six months. If the 
research study period abroad is longer than six months, support will only 
be given for six months to a maximum of the award amount of $6,000. 

Selection criteria 
The selection process and review procedures adopted by the institution 
must maintain a focus on excellence. Supplements must be evaluated using 
the following selection criteria: 
- Linkage between the current program of research goals (supported by the 
CGS), the proposed research/study activities at the host institution and 
the future research/career goals, including consideration of: 
- significance, feasibility, and merit of proposed research/study 
activities at the foreign institution; 
- justification for the choice of host institution and/or host supervisor; 
and;
