Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
Innovation Challenge Awards
These awards are open to recent graduates in natural sciences, engineering
and computer sciences. Eligible candidates must have submitted, or expect
to submit, their thesis between May 1, 2007 and May 14, 2008 (students
must successfully defend their thesis before the award is offered); and be
Canadian citizens or permanent residents in Canada at the time of
nomination.
Three awards are available, including a single first-prize award of
$10,000 and two runners-up worth $5,000 each. Winners will be selected by
a committee consisting of Canadians who are familiar with university
research and judging the potential of innovative ideas.
Each University may submit only two proposals, therefore we are soliciting
Expressions of Interest (EOIs) in order to select the two best proposals
to go forward. A four page Expression of Interest (EOI) consisting of the
following should be delivered to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (c/o
Karen Dancy Information Assistant, 283 York Lanes) by Friday, April 11,
2008.
a) A one- page summary of the research that clearly outlines why the
research was undertaken and the significance, impact and originality of
the results. This summary is a key element of the assessment process and
should not be a duplicate of the thesis abstract. Furthermore, the
summary must be presented in plain language, understandable by an
individual who is not familiar with the research.
b) A description of the primary commercial product or service that
could be implemented or developed through application of the research
results, including reference to other applications of the product or
service.
c) A brief description of the market for the product/research.
Proposals must explain the research, its impact and the main product or
service envisioned including its perceived value to customers or users.
d) A brief description of the obstacles and market risks to be
overcome; and/or additional research to be done before the product or
service would be in a marketable form. It is expected that the successful
applicants will be notified around April 18, 2008 in order to prepare full
proposals by May 15, 2008.
