Lingua Franca is a non-profit organization funded by the Agents of Change program under the Calumet and Stong Colleges. Lingua Franca aims to provide a platform for ESL students to enhance their communication and public speaking skills along with a space to practice their leadership skills.

Our Mentorship Program aims to provide peer-to-peer support to ESL students through consistent discussion lounges and workshops as they aim to decrease speech anxiety in terms of public speaking/presentation. Mentees will be assigned a Mentor (based on matching interests) who will guide them throughout the year with constant communication and a bundle of resources. They will be formed in groups of 2-3 students (maximum 5) to create a group network, develop leadership, and build a community. Mentees are invited to participate and take part in the activities happening at Lingua Franca's Speech Fest in March 2022.

Purpose of the Mentorship Program:

- To provide a comfortable space for ESL learners to practice their language skills

- To learn how to communicate professionally and informally in various situations

- To build teamwork, leadership, and professional development skills

- To have the opportunity to create their own community among people from different backgrounds but with similar experiences

What you can gain from this as a mentee:

- A space where you can freely enhance your English communication skills with continued support from the team
- An opportunity to develop your leadership skills by working as a group
- A chance to be recognized at the end of the year for your participation and improvement within the program

About the Documentary

Buried Seeds (Semillas en la Tierra) looks at peasants in Southern Costa Rica as a people who are diverse in many ways, yet proudly share a common identity, suffer similar challenges to their way of life, and hold common values dear. Despite the hardships of their rural way of life, they struggle to maintain it and critique the structural forces that adverse them. Buried Seeds tells this story through the words of twenty narrators, both men and women, young and old, landless and landholders, all of them peasants. This episode was made by the Las Nubes Project in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change (EUC) and the Faculty of Health (FoH) at York University in collaboration with the Universidad Técnica Nacional de Costa Rica and York Libraries and the financial support of EUC, FoH, York International and York Libraries.

About the Grounded Project

Grounded is a series of short documentaries filmed in rural Costa Rica on issues around environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, health, and human well-being, with the idea of revealing structural elements that constrain the pursuit of social and ecological wellbeing, as well as the opportunities that these grounded experiences offer for alternative ways of living. Simply call our reception line at (416)-736-5297<https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/individual-counselling> to connect with a counsellor for support. During your session, your counsellor will develop a goal with you, and help you move closer towards personal success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, our services are confidential and no problem is too small. We are here for you!

Group Support
Some students may prefer to meet with peers for encouragement and support rather than or in addition to meeting with a counsellor one-to-one. If group support is something that interests you, you’re in luck! SCHW will be offering the following groups (all of which are facilitated or co-facilitated by counsellors) during 2021-2022:

SCHW’s Monthly Trans and Non-binary Support Group

Our group is facilitated by Jay Jonah, a trans-masculine social worker who specializes in supporting trans and non-binary folxs. This group is a space to share as much or as little as you want. Ask questions, just listen in, or chat and make some new friends! Open to all trans, non-binary, gender-non-conforming folxs, and those who are questioning their gender.

Suicide Prevention & Awareness Certification

SCHW is continuing to offer licences for ‘LivingWorks Start’ to the York U community. In just one hour online, LivingWorks Start teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. We will be giving out licences every month, so add your name here<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=GBNTNBFw1E-H8KQ4FsSb0AD0UWS0aLhGmccT5ec3asBUMDhaOEtKVTNRUEVXUlYxVDBZVkxWT041RyQlQCN0PWcu>.
