Join the Stong College Welcome Team
Help new students and their families experience a sense of welcome and
belonging to York University, Stong College and their academic programs
during the Stong College Welcome Days. This is an elite group of high
performance students who want to volunteer to put their talents to work to
help new students begin their successful transition to university.
How will you benefit:

a key volunteer.

Stong College Welcome Team
The Welcome Team creates a warm and welcoming environment for new
students and their families at the Stong College Welcome Days (orientation
period). Welcome Team Members are upper year students who want to support
new students as they begin their studies at York University. They are the
face of the University, Faculty and program. Welcome Team Members must be
sensitive to the new student experience and possess a commitment to
support students, families and guests with accurate, helpful and inspiring
information to make the first days memorable. Welcome Team Members are
responsible for helping new students to; develop a sense of connectedness,
a sense of excitement about university life, a sense of resourcefulness to
navigate the campus, a sense of capability to start school with knowledge
of resources available to them, a sense of the University, College and
program cultures. The Welcome Team provides accurate information to help
incoming students navigate the campus; participate in orientation events
as they become members of the York University family.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Academically successful upper year students (B or higher).
· Committed to supporting first year student transition.
· Demonstrated abilities in interpersonal and group communication.
· Knowledge of university resources and opportunities for student
involvement.
· Available for training and orientation.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
· Participate in Peer Mentor training April 26, 2012 (mandatory).
· Participate in Welcome Day training August 22, 2012 (mandatory).
· Available to participate in Welcome Day and to assist with the
set-up of those Days (last week of August).
· Provides support to the Master or her delegate for the
implementation and evaluation of Stong College Welcome Days during
orientation for each of the academic programs listed above.
· Liaises with other orientation groups such as Faculty of Health
Student Ambassadors, Red Zone, academic program administrators, student
leaders, university dignitaries.
· Acts in a manner that is respectful, responsible, and professional
at all times.
· Agrees to remain on the Stong College Welcome Volunteer roster to
assist with other key College events.
