VAL-YU-ING our Peers – Monday, January 10, 2022 from 6:00pm-7:00pm

At Calumet and Stong Colleges, we strive to foster inclusivity and to celebrate diversity. Our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) team implements programs that allow students to learn about intersectionality and the ways in which we can achieve inclusion and equity within our school community. One of our programs includes a brand-new workshop called ValYUing Our Peers!

Whether we are learning in a physical classroom or through an online format, it is inevitable that as students, we will experience some challenging social interactions. Disagreeing about a controversial topic, using harmful speech, and misusing pronouns or terms associated with racially minoritized groups are just some of the ways in which conflict can arise among peers.

In the ValYUing Our Peers workshop, Community Development Coordinators, Stefanie and Emery, will prepare you to prevent and deal with such instances of conflict. We will discuss some types of social challenges that may occur in an educational setting, how to engage in mutually respectful dialogue, how to manage disagreements, and how to navigate various issues that come up through small group work. Attendees will also engage in some interactive scenarios and a concluding Q&A session.

Date: Monday January 10, 2022

Time: 6:00 – 7:00pm

Student counselling, health & well-being is here for you

Hello from Student Counselling, Health & Well-being<https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/> (SCHW) and welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! For those of you who are hearing about SCHW for the first time, we are a department in the Division of Students that supports the mental health and well-being of students at York University. As a new academic year begins, we wanted to take a moment to let you know about us and the FREE services and supports that are available to you this year.

Peer-led Workshops
Our team of peer health educators offer workshops on a variety of well-being topics including Mental Health 101, Nutrition Basics, Sleep for Better Grades, Healthier Coping Strategies, Self-Care, and much more. To see what is offered and to sign-up for a workshop, take a look here: https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/workshops

Individual Counselling
SCHW offers same-day and appointment-based counselling in a safe and non-judgemental space. University life can be challenging, and our team of counsellors are here to help you feel heard and understood. Simply call our reception line at (416)-736-5297<https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/individual-counselling> to connect with a counsellor for support. During your session, your counsellor will develop a goal with you, and help you move closer towards personal success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, our services are confidential and no problem is too small. We are here for you!

Group Support
Some students may prefer to meet with peers for encouragement and support rather than or in addition to meeting with a counsellor one-to-one. If group support is something that interests you, you’re in luck! SCHW will be offering the following groups (all of which are facilitated or co-facilitated by counsellors) during 2021-2022:

· LGBTQ2S+ Support Group

· Racialized Students Support Group

· Support Group for Survivors of Sexual Violence (in partnership with The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education)

· Virtual Trauma-Informed Yoga Group

· Gay Men’s Process Group

· Grief & Loss Group

To learn more about each group and/or how to connect, please visit:

The Racialized Students Support Group will resume in January 2022. If you are interested in attending, please refer to this link for more details about this group and how to join: https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/racialized-students-support-group

SCHW’s Monthly Trans and Non-binary Support Group

Join our monthly online group to meet other York students navigating gender in a relaxed and safe space. Our group is facilitated by Jay Jonah, a trans-masculine social worker who specializes in supporting trans and non-binary folxs. This group is a space to share as much or as little as you want. Ask questions, just listen in, or chat and make some new friends! Open to all trans, non-binary, gender-non-conforming folxs, and those who are questioning their gender.

Next meeting: January 26, 2022 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. EST on Zoom

Suicide Prevention & Awareness Certification

SCHW is continuing to offer licences for ‘LivingWorks Start’ to the York U community. In just one hour online, LivingWorks Start teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. We will be giving out licences every month, so add your name here<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=GBNTNBFw1E-H8KQ4FsSb0AD0UWS0aLhGmccT5ec3asBUMDhaOEtKVTNRUEVXUlYxVDBZVkxWT041RyQlQCN0PWcu>.

Note: The prompt will ask you to sign-in. Please sign-in with your entire York U Passport York credentials, e.g. [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. *However, if you have an email ending @my.yorku.ca, please replace that with @yorku.ca to access the application.
