Re: Ken's question
but how much stuff does anyone need to own?? what is this intoxication with
more and more property? (thats a rhetorical question...)
It may be a rhetorical question, but it's certainly related to the
"empowerment" of the "ownership society." In their book "The Health of Nations: why
inequality is harmful to your health", Kawachi and Kennedy lay out a convincing
argument that individualistic “intense positional competition feeds consumer
culture” (p. 71), and that it is no accident that the US, which tolerates the
greatest disparity of wealth and income, is also the home of most insatiable
and voracious conspicuous consumption in the world.

hi all,
this stuff is really scary. but its apace with the way the current regime
things- which is that you are what you own..and the purpose of the state is
buttress property rights (as opposed to assure the general well being of the
citizenry.) of course, anything that protects property rights makes sure that the
class structure remains rigid and in place.
in frists piece health care becomes a property right..and if you cant afford
the property, you will have no rights to it..
but how much stuff does anyone need to own?? what is this intoxication with
more and more property? (thats a rhetorical question...)

Subject: [SDOH] "Consumer-driven" medicine from the New England Journal
This week President Bush has sketched out his broad vision of an "ownership
society." This is code for a broad attack on many of the social programs in
the US including Social Security, Welfare, Medicare and Public Education. In
this week's New England Journal of Medicine, US Senator William Frist applies
this vision to health care with the concept of "Consumer Driven Health Care". I
am attaching a notation from the list-serve of the Physicians for a National
Health Program (www.pnhp.org).
I think it is important for our non-US friends to see the direction the
ideological winds are blowing here.
Best,
