A decade ago Canadians trusted<https://breachmedia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65872ce9fb13e143ee45004f3&id=464b1c9199&e=9e41d6a6ae> police more than the education system, the courts, and the media. A majority also thought racism wasn’t a serious problem.

But today, on the heels of widespread protest and education, a majority of Canadians now support defunding the police.

Heading into an election in a province that has seen a slew of high-profile incidents involving police violence, are Ontario’s political parties adapting their platforms to reflect shifting public opinion and sound policy proposals?

In a word, no.

“Real solutions to the problem of police violence and abuse are within reach,” writes<https://breachmedia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65872ce9fb13e143ee45004f3&id=9d8b16b969&e=9e41d6a6ae> Aidan Simardone. “But in Ontario, none of those solutions appear to be on the table in the 2022 election.”

More than 100,000 people are now missing in Mexico. Disappeared.

Families are forming support groups and searching for their loved ones everywhere. In prisons, in mangroves, even in abandoned mines.

Justin Trudeau has prioritized the state of free trade between the countries, while characterizing Mexico as sharing Canada’s commitment to “adopting feminist policies” and “empowering Indigenous peoples.”

But Ottawa’s silence on the gross rights violations in Mexico speaks to something much deeper than a foreign policy misstep, writes<https://breachmedia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65872ce9fb13e143ee45004f3&id=e211ee2866&e=9e41d6a6ae> Dawn Marie Paley. It reflects Canada’s own failure to respond to disappearances domestically, which disproportionately impacts Indigenous peoples.
