To the management of Encana Corp.,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding EnCana's plans for expanding
oil activities in the Ecuadorian Amazon, particularly in indigenous and
protected territories. These include parts of the Cuyabeno Wildlife
Reserve and Yasuni National Park (a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve), both
unrivalled for their biodiversity and numbers of vulnerable species. Many
indigenous groups in both parks reject oil development while Yasuni is also
home to uncontacted indigenous peoples for whom oil development will spell
cultural and physical destruction.

Sometimes being responsible means adhering to the highest social and
environmental standards, but in these regions it means acknowledging that
any activity will result in irreversible damage to sensitive ecosystems and
the people who depend on them. I urge EnCana to set new industry
standards: respect the boundaries of these parks and the rights of their
residents; put the planet ahead of profits.
Sincerely,

Address (for a response):

BACKGROUND:
Calgary oil giant EnCana has come under fire for its lead role as the
largest shareholder in the highly controversial OCP (Oleoducto de Crudos
Pesados, Heavy Crude Pipeline), a pipeline traversing Ecuador from the
Amazon to the Pacific intended to double Ecuador's oil production. Massive
local and international opposition contributed to delaying pipeline
construction for several months, accompanied by protests, financial
downgrading, over 20 work stoppages, and landslides. Landowners along the
500 km-long route have been allegedly intimidated, assaulted, and illegally
imprisoned at the hands of Ecuadorian police contracted by the EnCana-led
consortium. Many fear the pipeline is an environmental disaster waiting to
happen, as it crosses 94 seismic fault lines.

EnCana's aggressive plans to fill the new pipeline include expanding their
operations deep into the Amazon, where they manage two oil concession
blocks. One overlaps Yasuni National Park (a UNESCO World Biosphere
Reserve) while the other includes part of an "Untouchable Zone" - land
declared by the Ecuadorian government to be inviolable in order to protect
threatened indigenous groups inhabiting the area and the fragile ecosystems
they depend upon. This area is home to as many as three
uncontacted indigenous groups, who have responded to contact violently in
the past. EnCana can not responsibly expand oil production in these
regions and we have to let them know we care!
