"Several studies have shown the inadequate response of food banking to reducing food insecurity in Canada (Azadian et al., 2022; Loopstra, 2018; Mendly-Zambo et al., 2021; Riches, 2002, 2018). In the recent federal government’s Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Report food banks are mentioned as “National leaders to relieve hunger today and prevent hunger tomorrow”2. Yet, critics argue government’s reliance on food banks and other emergency food providers depoliticizes food insecurity as a serious public issue and absolves the government from addressing the root causes of food insecurity (Azadian et al., 2022; Loopstra, 2018; Mendly-Zambo et al., 2021; Riches, 2002, 2018)"
