Melon felons:

In citing Mark Twain’s story “The First Melon I Ever Stole,” Freud is once again casting one literary sensibility against another siding with Twain against Rolland as he had done earlier with Heine. His purpose is to signal the dangers of overly strict moral stances. To answer Rolland’s righteousness, to refute the French moralists’ defense of a severe conscience, Freud juxtaposes Twain’s light, sarcastic musings on melon stealing. The melon is a sexually evocative symbol, and to engage in melon stealing is to fulfill a proscribed but universal wish. Twain wonders out loud: “Was it the first?” And Freud replies: “The first melon was evidently not the only one.” Thus Freud himself steals the metaphor to indicate in a gentle way that virtue often cloaks underlying aggressive and erotic tendencies. Like Heine’s, Twain’s honesty is refreshing and funny; Freud was delighted by Twain’s ability to lift the censorship which surrounds pilfering and other “immoral” acts. He viewed this admission as a disruptive activity which carried an important psychological significance.

Chinese Taoists similarly assumed disruptive stances in relation to what they perceived as an overly strict Confucian orthodoxy. The classic example is the tale of a Taoist mystic sitting meditating in his mountain hut, naked. When a posse of dour Confucian moralists hiked up to the Taoist’s mountain retreat, they entered his hut and were shocked. “How dare you sit there naked in your hut!” 

Taoist opening his eyes slowly. “This entire universe is my hut, this little hut is just my pants. What are you guys doing inside my pants?”

Traditional haiku often own up to the fact that melons and other pleasures taste better snitched. In fact, snitching is something of a zen virtue: because natural.

It appears that the pernicious layer of racism applied to watermelon theft in the South (and elsewhere, I’m sure) was in good part a deplorable addition to the already venerable and much broader cultural and folkloric themes of filching the bounty of someone else’s land, whether as a fish/game poacher or as an orchard/garden raider. For one example, the idea is everywhere, in compelling variety, in literature: John Buchan’s John McNab, Tolkien’s young hobbits in farmer Maggot’s mushrooms, Beatrix Potter’s bunnies in farmer McGregor’s garden, and Dorothy and the Scarecrow among the apple trees all come instantly to mind. That particular thievery trope seems ancient. Part of its appeal to historians is that in a fascinating number of instances (think six centuries of Robin Hood) the perpetrator is portrayed sympathetically if not heroically--and often but not always as something of a class warrior. If such sympathies survived the overlay of racism in the rise of the watermelon/African-American theme, they seem only have been of the most condescending sort.
