I have a copy of THE GILDED AGE with the "forged" title-page. That same
type-setting was used (but with a San Francisco imprint dated 1873) in the
prospectus that was used in California (of which I also have a copy). I also
have a dozen copies of the usual title-page with variant city imprints, and
two copies with secret marks added to the plate by the publisher for unknown
reasons. These books are in my private collection and not for sale. Neither
BAL, nor any other bibliographer, records the copies with secret marks, or
the SF prospectus title-page. I'm extremely busy with Boston bookfair
business at the moment but will be happy to share details with researchers
next week when I'm caught up.
