On 19 September 2001 CNS implemented the Norton AntiVirus for
Gateways software on inbound and outbound email servers they
maintain.

The software detects and removes infected email attachments from
messages passing through the CNS email servers. This applies to
inbound mail addressed to "anyone"@yorku.ca and outbound mail
sent via mailrelay.yorku.ca The latest information from the
vendor's (Symantec Corp.) virus database will automatically be
used to ensure that viruses are detected as soon as they become
known.

The AntiVirus software will replace any infected attachment with
text that explains why the attachment was removed. The rest of
the (uninfected) message will be delivered unchanged. The sender
of an infected email message receives a notification indicating
that they were attempting to send a virus and that the attachment
has been removed.

The Norton AntiVirus for Gateways software is an important
additional measure for preventing the spread of email borne
computer viruses. It is not a replacement for desktop anti-virus
software. To safeguard your computer, you should always run
up-to-date desktop anti-virus software.
