DATELINE NBC:
7:00-8:00 p.m. (EST)
Sunday, February 2, 1997.
Dateline NBC is schedule to air a segment about censorship and _Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn_ featuring Jocelyn Chadwick-Joshua, of the Dallas
Institute of Humanities and Culture. A camera crew filmed her teaching
Twain in a predominantly black high school in Dallas for the segment.
Dr. Jocelyn Chadwick-Joshua was the recipient of the TLA/SIRS (Texas
Library Association/Social Issues Resources Series) Intellectual Freedom
Award in 1992.
In 1995, she was a presenter at the Summer Teacher's Institute on Teaching
_Adventures of Huckleberry Finn_ held at the Mark Twain House in Hartford,
Connecticut.
In 1996, The Playboy Foundation honored her with one of its six Hugh M.
Hefner First Amendment Awards. Dr. Chadwick-Joshua was recognized in the
education category for eloquently and courageously defending the right of
teachers and students to study the works of Mark Twain. "A Twain scholar
and an African-American, she earned the respect and appreciation of many
parents, teachers, and students when she defended Twain's place in the
classroom, even as members of her church were leading a campaign opposing
_Adventures of Huckleberry Finn_."
