What is the question? Is it: why did Smith write that particular book? That is hard to
answer, given Smith's guarded nature. Or is it: why that title? To the latter question the
simplest answer is that it describes the contents of the book very accurately (just as the
Theory of Moral Sentiments is precisely about moral sentiments). The whole of the Wealth
of Nations is structured around the question posed by the title.
