On behalf of the County of Elgin and the Elgin County Archives, I am pleased to announce the release of the following publication:  Tremaine's Map of the County of Elgin, 1864:  Commemorative Edition in Celebration of the Sesquicentennial of the County of Elgin, 1852-2002.

The Tremaine family produced a total of 15 county maps in Ontario between 1856 and 1864, with the Elgin map being their very last one.  The original map measures approximately two metres by one metre and records the names of approximately 5,500 property owners in the county at the time by lot and concession, with numerous insets and views adorning its borders.  Elgin County Council commissioned the map's re-publication in atlas form as a Sesquicentennial project so that this important resource could be more accessible to the public.  All names are completely legible.  The publication also comes with a historical overview placing the map within context and an alphabetical index courtesy of the Elgin County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
