I am writing at the suggestion of the Twain Center in Elmira. I work for an
environmental organization, and I am trying to track down a source for a
quote that is commonly attributed to Twain in research about conflicts over
access to water.

The quote is: "Whiskey's for drinking, water's for fighting about."

I have found numerous uses of this quote, all attributed to Twain.
I have looked through the standard reference materials, and even visited the
Elmira center on my vacation this week.

I am beginning to think that this quote may be one that sounds like Twain
could have said it, but was never written or spoken by him. Given how widely
circulated this quote is, I would like to categorically nail it down.

Can anyone help me? Is there a list anywhere of quotes that are attributed
to Twain that he never said or wrote?
