Might I suggest a pedagogy reading to go with Susan's excellent approach?
*Teaching with your Mouth Shut* by Donald L. Finkel, Boynton/Cook,
Portsmouth NH, 2000. The short of it is that this book is full of wonderful
ideas about doing just what the title says, which mostly involves the sort
of exercises (or conceptual workshops, as he calls them) that Susan
describes. This is a book that has transformed my teaching in a number of
ways, and I strongly recommend it to those with an interest in alternative
pedagogies.
