Interestingly, "The" was included in _The Adventures of Tom Sawyer_.

Why would Sam want it to be omitted in what he saw, at least initially, as
a
companion book to TS? If he had a reason, and as has been said, "The" is
lacking on his manuscript, that reason has been lost.
