The Professional Learning Centre is offering "Copyright Demystified" in
Ottawa and Toronto on Wed. 21 Sept 2005 (Ottawa) and Fri. 30 Sept 2005
(Toronto). A brief description follows; for further information, see
<plc.fis.utoronto.ca>

The Canadian Copyright Act attempts to provide a fair balance between
the rights of those who create works, and the needs of those who use
them. However, that balance is being tested by advances in communication
and digital technologies that make it easy to copy and disseminate
others' work without their knowledge or permission. The vigorous debate
around this policy issue has heightened awareness of the consequences of
copyright infringement. Cultural heritage institutions, their employees
and their patrons are rightly concerned about copyright issues.

Using a combination of lecture, examples, handouts and discussion, this
one-day course will take you through the main provisions of the Canadian
Copyright Act and provide you with the tools to analyze a copyright
problem and develop your institutional policy on this complex matter.
