ARCHIVIST POSITION – REPOSTING

York University Libraries invite applications for the position of
Archivist.  This is a one-year contractually-limited appointment to
begin July 1, 2005. Responsibilities include reference and research
services in Archives and Special Collections; the appraisal,
accessioning, arrangement, description, control and physical handling of
both private papers and university records; substituting for the
University Archivist as required.

York University is the third largest university in Canada serving a
population of approximately 50,000 students from diverse cultures. York
University Archives and Special Collections hold 690 metres of
university records; over 1900 metres of private and institutional papers
and an extensive collection of non-textual materials (e.g. the Music
Gallery, Danny Grossman Dance Company, and Toronto Telegram photograph
collections). Special Collections has over 20,000 volumes of published
Canadiana, including Canadian pamphlets.

Qualifications

MAS, or another master’s degree with a concentration in archival
studies.  Up to five years of post-graduate experience.  Demonstrated
experience and ability in processing and providing access to archival
and special collections.  Ability to undertake physical processing and
handling of records.  Working knowledge of Rules for Archival
Description (RAD) and records/information management.  An understanding
of copyright, privacy legislation and Encoded Archival Description
(EAD). Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and
demonstrated ability in supervising the work of others. Strong oral and
written communication skills; ability to maintain effective working
relationships with University officers, colleagues and donors. Knowledge
of French is an asset.
