Health Promotion Ontario (HPO), a network of Health Promotion
practitioners working in the province of Ontario, Canada, sent out the
following notice through its member listserv hpoph-l.
----------------------

At the Canadian Public Health Association Conference in Ottawa last
week, version 1.0 of the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada
was released. The document is available electronically at the following
link:
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/ccph-cesp/index-eng.html

Many public health workers were involved in the extensive consultation
process that led to the release of this first version of the
competencies.

" Core competencies are the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes
necessary for the practice of public health. They transcend the
boundaries of specific disciplines and are independent of program and
topic. They provide the building blocks for effective public health
practice, and the use of an overall public health approach."

Last week's launch represents an important first step for the core
competencies, and they will evolve as the various disciplines, public
health organizations and academic community begin to apply and refine
them.

There is a wealth of information and resources regarding the
competencies on the PHAC website.

One of the next steps is the development of discipline-specific
competencies. Health Promotion Ontario hopes to further develop their
discussion paper on HP competencies,* and work towards engaging the
other provinces and territories towards developing a national set of
discipline-specific competencies for health promotion.

*The HPO discussion paper is called "Towards the Development of
Competencies for Health Promoters in Canada" and is available at:
