With respect to animal spirits and rationality, and the  history

of motivation in economic agents, I recommend that you read

ANIMAL SPIRITS by Akerlof and Shiller.  Perhaps unconsciously,

they make the point that animal spirits and rationality are just

two sides of one coin.  Having had bad experiences in the past

agents rationally panic to prevent having such experiences

again (p. 61).
