Dear Friends,
The conference "Utilitarianism: Analysis and History" organized by the
Association Charles Gide pour l'Etude de la Pensee Economique and the
University of Lille I will occur on January 25-26, 1996. More than sixty
papers (out of 85 proposals) have been selected by the Steering Committee
and 160 researchers have already expressed their intention to attend the
conference.
The conference will take place in the "Centre des Archives du Monde du
Travail" (Labor World Archives Center), 78 Boulevard du General Leclerc in
Roubaix (near Lille).
The General Meeting of the Association Charles Gide pour l'Etude de la
Pensee Economique will take place on Thursday 25th, in the late afternoon,
from 17.30 to 19.30.
Finally, on Saturday morning, the participants will have the opportunity to
visit a monument of the early 19th century utopian architecture, the "Grand
Hornu", located in Belgium, about one hour from Lille.
Looking forward to seeing you soon in Lille
Yours sincerely
For the Steering Committee

On Saturday morning, the participants will have the opportunity to visit a
monument of the early 19th century utopian architecture, the "Grand Hornu",
located in Begium, about one hour from Lille. The coach will leave Roubaix
at 9.00. The visit will last from 10.00 to 12.00. All participants will be
back at the Lille Railway stations by 13.00.
Built in the early 19th century, "Grand Hornu" quite extraordinarily
examplifies the social project (inherited from the Enlightenment) of an
ideal city which should favour the blossoming out of new men. This
architectural monument has little to see with the mining villages of the
second half of the 19th century. Our guest, Henri Guchet, is the architect
who saved and rehabilitated the place. He will relate its history and
analyse its architectural rationality.
