Thanks Jim and Gregg,

I think that answers my question as essentially I was trying to get a
handle on how formidable Twain's debt was for that period of time. Of
course, there was probably no one better suited to recoup the lost
dollars in his fashion, ie. the lecture circuit and the resulting book.
