Here are two that came to mind while watching the show: First, the
possibility that the legend got "transposed" over the years, and in fact it
was Captain Ainsworth who gave a watch to Mark Twain. (There is a project
for someone: Tracing the provenance of all of Mark Twain's known watches.)
Or, perhaps one won a watch from the other in a card game. In either case,
this is presuming the story contains an element of truth--which of course
it may not.
