Back in the 70's I did a research project at college re Twain and his role in
the Confed Army. An interesting offshoot of this was how in 1940 when the
Mark Twain stamp was released by the US Postal service the first day of issue
site was debated on the floor of Congress. The rep from Mo. didn't want the
stamp released in Hannibal due to Twain's alleged desertion. The rep from CT
asked to have it released in Hartford but despite the debate it was
ultimately released in Hannibal. I have more info regarding that whole
episode if interested...Dave Neuburger
